Improved Modified Fat-Tree Topology Network-on-Chip

چکیده
C-based cycle-accurate simulations are used to evaluate the performance of a Network-On-Chip (NoC) based on an improved version of the modified Fat Tree topology. The modification simplifies routing further and guarantee orderly reception of packets without any loss of performance. Several traffic models have been used in these simulations; Bursty and non-bursty traffic with uniformlydistributed destination addresses and non-uniformly-distributed destination addresses. A simple new traffic model has been developed for generating non-uniformly-distributed destination addresses. This model is general enough to be used in developing new NoC architectures and captures universally accepted place-and-route methodologies. Simulation results are used to illustrate how the hardware resources of a modified Fat Tree NoC can be minimized without affecting the network performance. The performance of a NoC with regular Mesh topology was also evaluated for comparison with the modified Fat Tree topology.

A New Client Interface Architecture for the Modified Fat Tree (MFT) Network-on-Chip (NoC) Topology
A new client interface for the Modified Fat Tree (MFT) Network-on-Chip (NoC) is presented. It is directly inspired from the findings related to lane utilization and maximum FIFO sizes found in simulations of the MFT. A new smart arbitration circuit that efficiently realizes a round-robin scheduler between the receiving lanes has been developed. Simulation results show a clear viability and effi...
متن کاملFolded Fat H-Tree: An Interconnection Topology for Dynamically Reconfigurable Processor Array
Fat H-Tree is a novel on-chip network topology for a dynamic reconfigurable processor array. It includes both fat tree and torus structure, and suitable to map tasks in a stream processing. For on-chip implementation, folding layout is also proposed. Evaluation results show that Fat H-Tree reduces the distance of H-Tree from 13% to 55%, and stretches the throughput almost three times.

System on Chip (SoC) design in the billion transistor era will involve the integration of numerous heterogeneous semiconductor intellectual property blocks. Some of the main problems arise from non-scalable global wires delays, failure to achieve global synchronization and errors due to signal integrity issues. In order to keep a low time-to-market factor new design methodologies must be develo...
متن کاملCost-aware Topology Customization of Mesh-based Networks-on-Chip
Nowadays, the growing demand for supporting multiple applications causes to use multiple IPs onto the chip. In fact, finding truly scalable communication architecture will be a critical concern. To this end, the Networks-on-Chip (NoC) paradigm has emerged as a promising solution to on-chip communication challenges within the silicon-based electronics. Many of today’s NoC architectures are based...
متن کاملButterfly vs. Unidirectional Fat-Trees for Networks-on-Chip: not a Mere Permutation of Outputs∗
Bidirectional topologies are usually preferred over unidirectional ones. However, recent works have demonstrated that RUFT, a traffic-balancing routing algorithm on a Unidirectional Multistage Network (UMIN), can perform as well as a Bidirectional Multistage Network, but significantly reducing both implementation and operating costs. RUFT is a simplification of the k-ary n-tree topology, the mo...
